Goviers of Sidmouth
When Ada Govier opened the doors of Goviers of Sidmouth for trading in 1904, little did she realise that 100 years later the shop would be one of the foremost retailers of fine china in the country.
For over a quarter of a century Foster Leighton have been proud to give today’s owner Alan Morgenroth personal sensible solutions for all his many specialist eventualities.
In 1989 Margaret Thatcher was due to celebrate 10 years in office. Alan had commissioned a design from Crown Derby for a Limited Edition commemorative plate and loving cup, in the anticipation that she would achieve this milestone. Foster Leighton were able to arrange insurance cover so that in the event of her not reaching the ten year goal for any reason, Alan would not find himself financially out of pocket. The premium was relatively small but did include a loving cup for the underwriter, which is on display at Lloyds. With hindsight, Alan says that had she not made it, the chinaware would have acquired an extra curiosity value for collectors. At the time it was considered vital cover, and Foster Leighton came up with the goods.
