Car Crushing

Car Crushing

The Motor Insurer's Bureau (MIB) has just launched its new Stay Insured campaign. According to the MIB there are a staggering 1.7M motorists who take to the roads daily without proper insurance. Last year the number of drivers caught without insurance would have filled Wembley Stadium twice over. You may have already heard about the increasing numbers of uninsured vehicles being seized by the police. Vehicles seized and crushed would have filled the Channel Tunnel nose to tail in both directions. This is great news for the honest motorists who are subsidising these cheats.

However, you may not know that the accuracy and currency of the Motor Insurance Database (MID) has a direct impact on the success of this campaign to take uni...

Are your Valuables Underinsured?

Are your Valuables Underinsured?

If you have purchased a diamond ring or anything else made from precious metals in the last few years and insured it for the purchase price, you may now find it difficult to replace for the original cost.

With the strength of the Euro and the Dollar against Sterling this is having an effect on the replacement values for all luxury brand goods.

  • The price of Gold is also at an all time 5 year high.
  • The exchange rate for the dollar has shifted from 2.1 to the pound last year to around 1.5 at the time of writing.
  • The value of diamonds is mainly dollar based.

Foster Leighton goes over the top for CHICKS

Foster Leighton goes over the top for CHICKS

Two members of Foster Leighton's staff have helped a local charity CHICKS to raise over £3,000 by abseiling down the side of the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth. Our picture shows the intrepid pair, John Foster and Elaine Dyer just about to embark on their scary 75ft descent back to terra firma. Naturally, Health and Safety and Risk Assessments were uppermost in their minds but we are pleased to say that the training and safety drills given by the CHICKS team of instructors were first class, and of course insurance for the whole event was placed by Foster Leighton. On getting back to the ground Elaine said 'If I had known how high it was I would never have agreed to do it, but once I got over the top it was great f...

Andrew Wilson

Foster Leighton are saddened to announce the death of their Consultant, Andrew Wilson after a short illness.

Andrew joined Foster Leighton in 2006 after their acquisition of Wilson & Co Insurance Brokers of Ottery St Mary, which he ran for over 20 years. Andrew was a Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute, and will be missed by many friends and colleagues in the Insurance Industry as well as his former clients. He leaves a widow Helen and two children, Michael and Gwen, and we extend our deepest sympathy to them for their loss.

John Foster, Chairman of Foster Leighton said "Andrew was an old fashioned insurance man in the best sense of the word. Always putting his client's interests ahead of his ow...

Commercial Team Strengthens

"We are delighted to announce that we have been able to strengthen our commercial team with the addition of Jeremy Tancock, who has joined us from the Norwich Union. Jeremy is a local chap, with a wealth of experience in the insurance industry built up over the years working with brokers and insurers.  His local knowledge is invaluable in representing our client’s interests to their best advantage, to insurers who are based all over the country and lack the detailed understanding of running a business in the South West." ~ John Foster, Chairman

As well as underwriting Jeremy has a wealth of knowledge in dealing with commercial claims an...

Foster Leighton on top of the world !

Foster Leighton on top of the world !

A Foster Leighton polo shirt of the type usually only sported at Golf Days and other corporate events was recently seen on the so-called “Roof of the World”, Nepal. It was proudly worn by Holly, age 15, the daughter of one of our Account Handlers Elaine Dyer, on her school visit to the region this spring.

Foster Leighton was delighted to be able to become one of the many sponsors of her trip, and being seen in high places wearing our shirt was her way of saying “Thank you”

Holly has sent us a write up of her Visit to Nepal, and this can be downloaded here.

Foster Leighton Acquires Three Local Brokers

In 2006, Foster Leighton took over the business of Wilson & Co of Ottery St Mary. Wilsons were a long established commercial insurance broker with an excellent list of clients throughout the West Country and beyond. To ensure continuity and a seamless handover, the proprietor Andrew Wilson FCII has been engaged as a Consultant to Foster Leighton, and his son, Michael who was formerly working for him is now an Account Handler with us. We are pleased to say that client retention and satisfaction levels remain very high more than halfway through the assimilation process. A “Win/Win/Win” situation for everyone involved!

In addition, in a busy year for acquisitions, we t...

New Appointment

The Board of Foster Leighton has asked Simon Palmer BSc, MAAT to assume the role of Group Company Secretary with effect from 1st January 2007.

Margaret Reid has carried out these duties to good effect for many years, but with the ever increasing complexity of company law, it was felt that this job was now one that required close and full time attention.

Margaret will remain on the staff and continue to assist Simon on Credit Control matters on a part time basis. John Foster and the other Directors thank Margaret for her excellent work and the loyalty to the Company she has shown over the years.

New Appointments

Foster Leighton has always been a technology led Company, and this has been an increasing trend over the past few years with the introduction of on-line services and in particular, the migration of our main policy record and accounting system to the Insight Application Service Provider environment.

Information systems will continue to play a vital role in our business and the Board of Directors realise the importance of having someone with expertise in this area among their number. Accordingly, they have invited David Liggins, our current Information Systems Manager to join the Board. David will also bring his Financial Services knowledge to further strengthen our position in that field. FSA approval for the appointment has been sought...

Foster Leighton are 100% FIT!

The Foster Leighton board decided recently that everyone in Foster Leighton (IFA’s, accounts and support staff, etc, in fact everyone except the cleaners), should have as a minimum standard of insurance knowledge passed the CII Foundation Insurance Test. No-one was exempted, not even the Chairman who passed his ACII exam more years ago than he cares to remember. This resulted in much swotting not least by John Foster who was concerned about how much ribbing he might come in for in the unlikely event of his failure. Finally, the day came for the mass sitting of the FIT exam, followed by deep joy all round – a 100% success rate. Rod Fry our T&C Officer is plotting ways of moving the bar still higher…………
